I was just looking at the 3D aerial view of Neville Hill - as far as I can see this one appears to be next to the turntable. The only possible IU remaining appears to be the yellow lowmac 278497 which is with an 08 shunter when the images were recorded. There are 4 bogie fuel tank wagons visible so I suspect small tanks 042180 & 042181 are long gone (2020ish?) as well as the flat wagons 041900, 041901 & 041902. I suppose there is a chance the flats are in use within the sheds. There is also a chance these wagon disposals may be linked to the disposals of 6360 & 6361 which went to Watsons, Stafford in 2024. Any updates appreciated.

I'm reliably informed this is no longer where it used to be. No other info at present...

Just added entry for this one as it didn't previously feature here (and a recent new member mentioned it!)

    I found this photo

    https://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/preview.asp?item=10546824&itemIndex=19&search=dynamometer+car&page=1&pixperpage=40

    But any more details welcome...

    Hi Roger

Thanks for the further response & for checking. It took me nearly 2 years to ask the original question, so no worries about timings.

I suspect it may have been in the sidings on the opposite side of the line. There was at least 1 similar vehicle I could see, which I was unable to identify. As they have several similar vehicles I shall just have to keep a better eye out for it next time.

    Best wishes

    Chris

Both cars put up for sale by the Midland Railway Trust in April 2026, sold as seen and to leave the railway.

    Hello Greg,

Yes, I was very lucky. I havn't sent all photos in yet. The vehicles you asked about - 024904 was outside at Swithland, 97638 is also outside, but is covered up and against one of the buffer stops behind R009, whilst 096055 is inside covered up. 083598 was at Quorn on my visit. Roger.

Hi Roger, ahh I see well I must applaud you there! I had a similar venture with a long awaited visit around Stewarts Lane a while back. It's great to see updated photos of the vehicles I need although a few have not appeared.. May I ask about

You saw these but no photos, were they all at Swithland? Also the recently arrived tank 083598, is that there too? Thanks

    Hello Greg,

I was very lucky in tracking down a gentleman on the GCR who had access to the shed and sidings at Swithland, but it took many months for me to be able to secure a visit, as he is busy most of the time. As regards the stock in the sidings, the unused vehicles tend to be behind the useable rakes, but of interest the three vehicles hidden in specially designed covers are R007 is 3013 (975653), R008 is 21031 and R009 is 34738. Inside the locked shed on my visit were 19 passenger coaches and vans, three locos, one DMU car and one Brake Van. The stock outside does get shunted about a lot, especially after galas. Just of interest, the six vehicles covered up at Rothley are R001 15207, R002 53193 (977898), R003 E1222 (320907), R004 16070, R005 24778 and R006 S70576. Hope this helps. Roger.

    Hello Chris,

Many apologies for not being able to answer sooner on this van. I have got the book down and looked at my photos on the day, and you are correct, it was a CCT next to 24006. I put the van down as 86828 which could be seen under the paint, (rather than 042126 or 93828), and I think it may have been inside the workshop as I'm surprised I did not take a photo of it. Sorry, that's the best I can do.

Hi Roger, so how have you been able to gain access to the yard there at Swithland? I need several vehicles stored there including this one, your pics are handy for reference!

Hi Alex, have try this link, https://www.bloodandcustard.com/SR-4SUB.html The vehicle was part of unit 4377 in old money. Hope this helps. I think there were numerous subtle differences depending on the year of the build and which workshop they were built in.

A rescue fund has been started for this GCR coach and it is to leave Ruddington soon.

Hi all. More of a question rather than a comment. I’ve always found these units curious in the cab end area, particularly the drivers and assistant front lookouts/windows are oddly positioned. Are these 4-Sub units with the cab fronts having been modified with the smaller windows, or were these originally built like this. Can’t find any photos of these cab ends in pass service prior to becoming departmentals. Any info would be interesting, always been intrigued by these. Thanks.

Conservation / restoration of this vehicle to its form as converted to departmental use (1959 we believe) commenced Feb 2026. This might be the only coach displayed in Ballast Messing Brake form.

Details will be updated on the East Anglian Railway Museum website: https://earm.co.uk/boston-coach/. Donations, of course, would be very gratefully received, as would any further details on this coach and the use to which it was put.

I think some sightings here maybe again mistaking this (confusingly numbered W150445) at Llynclys

For the actual DW150445 (not sure where this currently is? But also at Cambrian Railways)

Which I think means that the 'Notes' at the very top of the description of DE 320897 need a subtle amendment so that they start "Llangollen Railway (underframe only, bogies used for LNER 4268) ..."

  • 320897

    26 March 2026 - Paul Johnson

4268 retained it's underframe just it was stripped so it could be grounded. It sits on the bogies of 61710 which will have provided the bogie pivots. The Carriage Survey says 61710 underframe was scrapped .

  • 320897

    25 March 2026 - Russell Withington

To quote the caption of the photograph of LNER 4268 in the Llangollen Railway Stock Book: "It now sits on the frames from Gresley 61710 which was scrapped at Mangapps farm."

So the questions become "Are the Notes correct? is the underframe that LNER 4268 was put on from DE 320897? and is that the underframe that LNER 4268 is still on?" - it all looks to be very confusing!
